Alice C. Harris, 95, of New Ross, died on Thursday, July 18, 2019, at Whitlock Place Assisted Living in Crawfordsville.
She was born on April 30, 1924, on her family farm near New Market, Indiana, the only child of Howard H. and Mabel Galloway Munns.
She was a 1942 graduate of New Market High School and attended Indiana University. On May 12, 1944, she married Stanley H. Harris at Florence, Oregon. He preceded her in death on December 12, 2013.
For more than 70 years, Alice was a devoted member of Mace United Methodist Church, where she played the piano. She was also a member of Dorothy Q Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; Montgomery County Historical Society; and Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County.
Alice and Stanley were lifelong farmers in the New Ross and New Market areas, and were devoted stewards of the land, dedicated to leaving it better than they found it. Her family farm near New Market has been recognized with the Hoosier Homestead Award for farms owned by the same family for over 100 years.
In addition to her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother Nannie Munns and step-sister Helen Gevers.
She is survived by daughters Lynn E. (Larry) Robison of Crawfordsville and Sheila A. (David) Rhoads of New Ross, and son J. Lamont (Sherry) Harris of Crawfordsville. She is also survived by five grandchildren, who are Gail (Roberto) Heredia, Ann (David) Smith, Stephen (Kambria) Harris, Aron (Heather) Rhoads and Beth (Scott) Siple. She also leaves behind thirteen great-grandchildren, who are Gabriela Heredia, Laura Heredia, Roberto Heredia, Owen Smith, Caroline Smith, Hadley Harris, Grant Harris, Judson Harris, Cole Rhoads, Natalie Rhoads, Hallie Rhoads, Emory Siple and Avery Siple. In addition, David Walls, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, made his home with Alice and Stanley while he was a student at Purdue University.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 22, at Hunt & Son Funeral Home, 107 N. Grant Ave., Crawfordsville. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tami Mussche officiating. Burial will be at Mace Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mace United Methodist Church, 5546 East US 136, Crawfordsville, IN 47933; or to Dorothy Q Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, 400 East Wabash Avenue, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
