Arthur J. Harpel Sr., 100, of Crawfordsville, passed away at 10:58 p.m. Tuesday.
Mr. Harpel was born Nov. 14, 1906 in Waynetown.
He was a 1926 graduate of Waynetown High School and attended Wabash College on athletic scholarship. He married Mary Elizabeth Morrow on April 19, 1935 in Chicago. She survives. He was a farmer and had retired from Alcoa Aluminum in Lafayette. He lived a full and adventurous life, traveling in a covered wagon to Oklahoma during the land Rush, climbed Pikes Peak, and worked building airfields in Alaska during World War II. He was dearly loved and will be missed by his family and many friends. He was recently inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame for Montgomery County.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Barbara (Jim) Easter; son, Authur "Sandy" (Rita) Harpel Jr.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Harpel will be cremated with a private service held at a later date. The family will receive visitors Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., in their home at Williamsburg Assisted Living, 1592 Delegates Row.
