Beverly Ann Harpel, aged 66, died peacefully on August 1, 2016, surrounded by her family after she fiercely and bravely fought breast cancer for 13 years. Beverly was born December 4, 1949, in Crawfordsville, Indiana. She went to Coal Creek Central school through her sophomore year, and graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1967.
Beverly was the epitome of a public servant. She believed in giving back to the community and upholding the integrity of public service. She began her public service career with the Crawfordsville City Clerk Treasure's Office. She worked for Crawfordsville Electric Light & Power for three years, and then moved to the Crawfordsville Police Department where she was the secretary to the Chief of Police, and the "work mom" to numerous police officers, for over 30 years. Beverly was immensely proud to be part of the Crawfordsville Police Department family and dearly loved all of her men and women in Blue. She retired from the Police Department in February 2010.
On November 18, 1995, Beverly married the love of her life James (Jim) A. Harpel, and they lived in their dream home at Lake Holiday. Beverly loved taking boat rides with Jim in the evenings, working in her yard, and traveling. To say Beverly was a people person is an understatement. She didn't know a stranger, and loved helping people however she could, and spending time with friends and family. She played bunco with a group of ladies for nearly 40 years, loved playing euchre and dice games with friends, and spending time her grandchildren. Beverly was a member of the Woodland Heights Christian Church, the Montgomery County Basketball Hall of Fame board of directors, the Crawfordsville Business and Professional Women, and the Coal Creek Central Alumni Association. She also attended the monthly luncheons with her Crawfordsville High School classmates. Beverly was an avid participant in the annual Susan G. Komen walk for the cure in Indianapolis where she proudly walked in the survivors' parade every year after her diagnosis in 2003, but had to support the survivors and participants in the 2016 walk from home.
Beverly was resilient and a true warrior. She was determined to live life to the fullest and on her terms to the very end. She was an inspiration to so many people, and not only in her fight against breast cancer. She kept her faith in God through good times and bad, and encouraged people to trust His love for us.
Beverly is survived by daughter, Amber Kennedy (Bob) Miller of Indianapolis, stepchildren, Reese (Krissi) Harpel of Waynetown and Wendy (Jeff) Trout of Danville, IN, siblings, Bob (Connie) Cope, Jim (Nina) Cope, Larry Cope, Mark (Lisa) Cope, Jeff (Dede) Cope, Sherri (Mark) Suiter, Joyce Love, all of Crawfordsville, Tina (Skyler) Biddle of Linden, Donna (Max) Sheets of West Lafayette, sister in law, Jayne Cope of West Lafayette, grandchildren Jackson, Adrianna, Cameron, Clay, Joy, Rhiannon and Jules.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim, brother, David Cope, brother in law, Ron Love.
A celebration of life will be held on August 6, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Woodland Heights Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in Beverly's name to Susan G. Komen Central Indiana, 3500 DePauw Blvd, Suite 2070, Indianapolis, IN, 46268.
