IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dale Leon
Sowers
May 12, 1933 – May 21, 2020
On this day, May 21, 2020, at 3 a.m., God opened his arms and accepted Dale into his eternal loving care.
Dale was born May 12, 1933, at Waveland, Indiana, to Harold and Ruby (Dinwiddie) Sowers. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Barbara. He graduated in 1952 from Waveland High School.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Sowers of 20 years; and his four children, Mickie (Mike) Fisher, Melissa (Tom) Scudder, Michael (Myrna) Sowers and Mandi (Jerry) Millard from his previous marriage to Barbara Ann (Hobbs) Sowers, who passed away in 1996. Also surviving are, his brother, Dean Sowers, along with his three step-children, Stacey (Phil) Burkhardt, Michelle Waite and Shane (Jeanette) Cook. Dale will be fondly remembered by his 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He proudly served his country from 1951 to 1958 and also from 1977 to 1981 as staff sergeant for the National Guard. He was employed at RR Donnelley as a pressman and retired from there after 40 years of service. After retirement, he started another career because of his love of the outdoors. He mowed for the State of Indiana, KC&H and Link Mowing.
Dale loved his church and the church family that he had a Rock Point where he was a member. The verse that spoke to him most was John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
He was an avid fisherman, making many memories with his family and friends, while holding a fishing pole. Dale had a real appreciation for wood working and was very skillful at using sassafras wood, creating things such as chests, writing desks and shelves.
His greatest joys were vacations with his family and the holidays where everyone was gathered together and sharing a meal. Not being a picky eater, he would eat whatever was in front of him because he absolutely loved to eat. Savoring each bite, especially his favorite, fried green tomatoes. Ever present, by his chair, was his Bible and an unending supply of Milky Way bars.
One of the things he missed, as he got older and couldn't drive, was taking the car for a drive with his wife, Pat. Sometimes, they would take his mom, Ruby, with them or sometimes friends. They would meander down winding, curving roads, enjoying the display of God's creation. A regular routine after retirement was morning coffee with his buddies and the Mountie Mart in New Market and discussing the latest happenings in the county.
Dale never saw a stranger and called everybody his friend. He lived his life well, with respect for others. His character was solid and good, and he shared his gentle heart with everyone he met.
A graveside memorial service, held in his honor, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the Old Union Cemetery, Waveland. Pastor Terry Thompson will officiate. Everyone is welcome to attend. Hunt & Son Funeral Home has been entrusted with Dale's care.
A memorial contribution may be made to Rock Point Church, 429 W. C.R. 150S, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
