David Flohr

David John Flohr, 64, formerly of Lagos, Nigeria; Hamburg, West Germany; and Arcadia, California, passed away on Saturday at the family farm in New Ross surrounded by his critters and loved ones.

Born on Valentine's Day in Dover, Delaware, to John Flohr and Jean Otterholm, David spent much of his childhood living internationally with his family. After settling in southern California in the mid-1970s, he embraced its laid-back lifestyle and developed the positive outlook that would define him throughout his life.

David married his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth “Beth” Calhan, on February 9, 1991, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Crawfordsville. The couple settled in Ladoga and had one daughter, Emma, currently of Detroit. Diagnosed with ALS in September 2021, David battled his disease for five years with determination and humor, becoming a valued member of the Indianapolis ALS community.

He is survived by his wife and daughter, sister Susan (Peter) Rosenburg of San Dimas, California; brother Douglas of Pasadena, California; six nephews; three nieces; four cats; nine sheep; seven chickens; and one very loyal dog, Duncan.

His services will be held on Friday, Aug. 7, at Hunt & Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville (107 N. Grant Ave). Visitation will be from 3 to 5pm with a memorial service beginning after 5.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stronger Together Against ALS Foundation (STAALS), ALS United Indiana, or Detroit Alley Cats pet rescue in Detroit, Michigan.

Those who knew David will remember him for his integrity, great sense of humor, and his natural ability to make a friend out of any stranger. He found happiness in sharing a beer with friends, stories with loved ones, and time with those who enjoyed life as much as he did.
