Don fine grew up in Waynetown IN, and was a 1954 graduate of
Waynetown High School. As a young man he worked in the
family asphalt paving business before going to Purdue
University where he received a bachelor's of science
degree in math & physics in 1958. In the fall of 1959 he started
a teaching career in the Crawfordsville schools in the
math department. He spent 10 years teaching math before
receiving his master's of science from Indiana State
University in school administration. He then served 18 years
as assistant principal at Tuttle Junior High school until the
spring of 1987 when he became principal and served in that
position until his retirment in 1996.
During his last years as assistant principal, Don was
instrumental in the philosophical and physical shift to
include the 6th grade at Tuttle and move the freshmen to
the high school. Don played the key role in the research
and development as to the educational changes with
students, parents and faculty for Tuttle to become a
Middle school. He led the community in this movement
that brought Crawfordsville schools to the forefront of
middle school education in Indiana. Don paved the way for
the educational environment our children are still
experiencing today in Crawfordsville.
While managing his education career, Don also served for 30
years in the Army reserve and retired with the rank of
Colonel. He served as chief of staff at Fort Benjamin Harrison in his final role
with the reserves.
Don also took an active community role as well. He
served 2 terms on the Crawfordsville city council from
1980-1987. He was also a member of the Montgomery County
Historical Society board of directors from 1996 to 2007
where he served 2 years as president. In 2000, Don, along with
Claude Johnson & Joe O'rourke founded the Montgomery
County Leadership Academy. Together they organized,
sought funding and taught the first several classes of
at the academy in its infancy. This program has continued
to grow and has given many adults working in city and
county businesses and industry the option and ability to
gain valuable leadership skills for their workplace
environment.
One of Don's largest commitments has been his involvement
in the Strawberry Festival where he spent many years
making this annual event what it is today. He has been a past
chairman of the festival and was instrumental in developing and
leading a fund raising program that is today referred to as the Partner Program.
Don was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church and as he did for his
community, took many active roles within the Church.
He loved is wife, children, grandchildren, community and country and gave
unselfishly of himself to all throughout his life. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
