Donald E. Hunt, 84, of Crawfordsville passed away Dec. 22, 2015.
He was born March 29, 1931, at Indianapolis, to the late Harley and Bertha Hunt. He graduated from McCordsville High School and attended Butler University, where he was a basketball team walk on for Coach Tony Hinkle.
He entered the Marine Corps and served in the Korean Conflict. When he returned to Indiana, he graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science. He worked at Hunt & Son Funeral Home until 1971. He then became an underwriter and financial advisor for Mutual of New York and was a member of the million dollar round table of the Life Underwriters Association.
Don served as a Crawfordsville City Councilman and later ran for State Representative. He was past president of Crawfordsville Electric Light & Power, and past director of the Crawfordsville/Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. He helped organize a community spirit promotion called "Montgomery on the Move." Don's enthusiasm and leadership has made Crawfordsville a better city in which to live and work.
Memberships held by Don included St. Bernard's Catholic Church, where he was a member of the first church board and served on many church committees throughout the years. He was Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in 1963. Civil memberships included Rotary, American Legion, Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and he also served on the board of the Historical Society.
His personal interests included golf, basketball, attending sporting events and art, specifically painting which he took up after his retirement.
Don was married to Mary Lou Gavin in 1956. He was father to three grown children, Kevin (Alice) Hunt, Julie (John) Hardaway and Sheila (Kevin) Roy. He was blessed with seven grandchildren, George, Geoff and Callie Hardaway, Gavin and Andrew Hunt, Rebecca and Duncan Roy. Don had many personal interests, but his children and grandchildren were his favorite.
Don's family wish to thank and express their heartfelt gratitude to the loving staff at Brownsburg Meadows who provided Don with excellent care.
Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Crawfordsville. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Alzheimer's Association or Montgomery County Community Foundation.
