Emma S. Peebles died December 21st. Mrs. Peebles was a retired editor and teacher. She worked at J.B.Lippincott, Philadelphia, and at the University of North Carolina Press. She taught American literature at Eastern Illinois University and Depauw University. For four years she managed the Wabash College Bookstore.
Her memberships included the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County, in which she was active for many years, serving as president three times. She was a director and treasurer of the Indiana League of Women Voters. An active feminist, she was treasurer of the state Gender Fairness Coalition. She helped establish the Youth Service Bureau in Crawfordsville. A founder of the Crawfordsville Commission on the Status of Women in 1976 and the Family Crisis Shelter in 1979, Mrs. Peebles served on the boards of both those organizations.
She was active on the Crawfordsville School Board Nominating Committee for several years and on volunteer school study committees. She belonged to St. John's Episcopal Church in Crawfordsville.
She graduated from Poland, Ohio, high school in 1948 and from Swarthmore College in 1952. She earned a master's degree at West Virginia University, 1955, and a doctorate at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) in 1960.
She was born April 9, 1930, at Youngstown, Ohio, to Richard C. and Mary E. Earnshaw Shepherd. She married I. Hall Peebles on Aug. 1, 1962, at Crawfordsville. He survives.
Three sons survive, David Peebles (husband of Rev. In Suk Hong Peebles), John Peebles, Crawfordsville, and Mark Peebles, Morton Grove, Illinois.
A twin sister, Ruth Tallmadge, and a brother, Richard E. Shepherd, are deceased.
A memorial service is scheduled to be held at St. John's Episcopal Church 1:00pm January 16th. Visitation will be from 11-1pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Youth Service Bureau or Family Crisis Shelter.
