Obituary

Frank Jeffrey "Jeff" Stewart was born on October 17, 1943, in Crawfordsville, Indiana to Edward and Mae Stewart.  He died February 28, 2025, at IU West Health Indianapolis, IN.

Jeff was the second of four sons and grew up with his parents and brothers in a loving home.  He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1961 and from Franklin College in 1965 with a degree in Mathematics.  He was commissioned as a Naval Officer in 1965. He married the love of his life, Geraldine "Jerri" Stewart on April 17, 1966 at First Baptist Church, Crawfordsville.  Jeff and Jerri had four children and moved around a bit as a military family.  Jeff served in the Navy for many years as a Supply Officer and left active duty as a Lt. Commander. He went on to serve his country as a civil servant in the Department of Defense for the Military Sealift Command, where he eventually earned the rank of GS-15.  He was proud of being a veteran and serving his country. He loved sharing his funny and sometimes harrowing stories of his time at sea with his children and grandchildren.

Jeff and Jerri raised their children in the church.  They were longtime members of First Baptist, Herndon, VA during their time spent in Herndon, VA.  He served as a deacon, sang in the church choir, and taught ESL (English as a Second Language). He instilled a love of learning and reading in his children and grandchildren, and always encouraged them to pursue a career that made them happy.

He was an active member of First Christian Church, Crawfordsville after Jeff and Jerri moved to Crawfordsville.  He volunteered for many organizations including CASA, Scouting, and Meals on Wheels. Jeff enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, whether camping, visiting historic sites and museums, or crushing everyone at chess.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Jerri, his parents and brothers John and Gary.  He is survived by his children Michael Stewart, Kristen (Andy) Hudson, Timothy Stewart and Heather (Andy) Borgerding.  He is also survived by his brother Kent (Kathy) Stewart, sister-in-law Arleen Stewart, brother-in-law Laurel "Larry" Gerold, Jr., and sister-in-law Karen Gerold.  Additionally, he is survived by eleven grandchildren, Ryan O'Neill, William O'Neill, Carolyn (Brad) Szabo, Jakob Borgerding, Charlotte Hudson, Samson Stewart, Caleb Immel, Callen Borgerding, Benjamin Hudson, Eden Borgerding, James Immel, as well as 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, March 5, at First Christian Church, Crawfordsville, with Pastor Darla Goodrich officiating.  Visitation will be from 10am-12pm at the church.  Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery South.
