Frederick A. Cantrell, 92, of Crawfordsville, died at home
on Thursday following a brief illness.
Dr. Cantrell was a dentist, serving the
Crawfordsville community from 1950 to
1991. He was a 1935 graduate of Oakland
City High School and a 1939 graduate
of Oakland City College. He taught
high school history and mathematics
and also coached basketball and baseball
at Freedom and Greentown High
Schools. He was inducted into the U.S.
Army in 1941, graduated from Officers'
Candidate School in 1942, and served in
the Anti-aircraft Artillery and the Transportation
Corps before being discharged in
1946. In 1950, he graduated from the Indiana University
School of Dentistry.
Dr. Cantrell was a member of the Ben Hur Dental Society,
serving as president for two separate terms and as secretary-
treasurer from 1998-1999; the Indiana Dental Society
serving as president from 1969-1970; the American College
of Dentists; and the International College of Dentists. He
was a member of the First United Methodist Church in
Crawfordsville.
Dr. Cantrell was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Oakland City, to
Loren A. and Deva Jean (Duncan) Cantrell. He married
Martha Ellen Utterback on June 24, 1942, in North Carolina.
She died on Jan. 10, 2009.
Survivors include two sons, James F. Cantrell of Crawfordsville,
and David E. (Gail) Cantrell of Lafayette; three
grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and 10 nieces and
nephews.
He was also preceded in death by son, Michael D.
Cantrell; sister, Evelyn Morrison; half-brothers, Clemmer
Cantrell and John Edward Cantrell; half-sisters Marjorie
Cantrell Orange and Alice Cantrell Brydges; and a nephew.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Monday
at Hunt and Son Funeral Home. Funeral services will be
at the funeral home following visitation, with Rev. Gary
Lewis officiating.
