Frederick W. "Fred" Goebel, 67, of Lake Holiday, passed away Friday morning at his residence.
Mr. Goebel was born March 9, 1941 in Chicago to William Goebel II and Ruth (Hayes) Goebel.
He graduated from John Morton High School in Cicero, Ill. and attended Northwestern University where he played football for Ara Parseghian.
After Northwestern, Mr. Goebel came to Crawfordsville and worked for RR Donnelley in 1966, retiring in 1996. After retirement, he also worked for the U.S. Post Office, Little-Brown, Ron Bodine Carpentry and most recently for The Paper of Montgomery County.
Mr. Goebel was a loyal Chicago sports fan. He especially loved the Chicago Cubs and the Bears. He also was passionate about the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where he worked as a Safety Patrol Supervisor for six years. He enjoyed fishing in Canada and traveling with the family. He was an ardent elephant collector. Mr. Goebel went on two mission trips to the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. In addition, he volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
Mr. Goebel was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Donnelley Retiree's Club and Southmont Band Boosters where he was a former co-president.
Mr. Goebel was previously married to Dorothy Robb, Relda Kaye Stoddard and Carol Lane Pair. He has been married to Kathy Massing Goebel for the past 14 years. She survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Cheryl (Douglas) Colliver or Martinsville, Lyndsay C. Goebel of Springville, Ala. and Kristen N. Wilhite of Crawfordsville; a brother, Lawrence Goebel of Crawfordsville; and a sister, Mildred Miller of Denver; two grandchildren, Heather (Bradford) Arnold and Elizabeth Colliver; and several nieces and nephews. In addition, Mr. Goebel was the American father for a foreign exchange student, Valentina Corrias of Arzana, Italy.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Relda Kaye Stoddard; a brother, James; a sister, Janet Deneau; and a grandson, Christopher Stoddard.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church with Fr. David Hellman officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home. There will be a Rosary service following visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bernard's New Orleans Mission or Knights of Columbus for Special Olympics.
