Obituary

We wish to inform you of the passing of Herman Allen Smith on July 9, 2018.  Herman was born on September 26, 1931 to Everett and Opal Smith of Advance, Indiana and was raised on the family farm in Boone County. He attended Providence Christian Church and was baptized on September 2, 1945. He graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1949.   He proudly served his country in the Navy during the Korean War.  Herman served as a Communications Technician, Second Class at the U.S. Naval Communication Stations in Guam and Washington, D.C.  He and his wife, Mary Jo Ward, of Mace, returned to the family farming business in Montgomery County and later Parke County.  Herman was active with Parke County 4-H and served on the Parke County Fair Board and served as Beef Superintendent. He was a long time member of the American Legion in New Ross and later in Kingman.  He attended the Methodist Church in Kingman.  Herman and Mary Jo proudly raised four children: Randy Smith of Ozark AR, Melinda (Tim) Athey, Clinton IN, Pam Smith of Bloomingdale IN, and Deb (Butch) Hammond, Stockwell IN. Herman's loving family of four children, nine grandchildren TJ (Melissa) Smith, Shannon Smith, Matthew (Amy) Athey, Lori (Jeremiah) Brown, Natalie McCall, Amanda (Stevie) Phillips, Josh Reynolds, Megann Reynolds, the late JT Hammond,  nine great-grandchildren will forever be grateful for the time spent with Herman and the late Mary Jo. All who knew Herman are welcome to attend graveside services at Greenlawn Cemetery Darlington Indiana on Thursday at 2:00 PM and immediately following celebrating his life at the Darlington American Legion from 3-5 PM.

In lieu of flowers the family requests those who wish may make an on-line donation to the American Cancer Association in memory of Herman Smith and his grandson J.T.Hammond.
