James Stanley Simpson, 103, died 8 a.m. Friday at Ben Hur Home in Crawfordsville, where he had been a resident since 1988.
Simpson worked many years as an agent for McClamroch-Groves Insurance with his neighbor from childhood, Charles Groves. Aquilla (Bud) Groves was Simpson's mainstay in later years.
He played the drums for dance bands, including the Wabash College Ambassadors,
locally at the Indiana Ballroom, and for vaudeville troupes at the Strand Theater. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1926.
He was born Aug. 3, 1906, to Edna Gertrude and William Simpson. He is the last survivor of a family that had arrived in Crawfordsville in the mid 1800s and for whom Simpson Street was named.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters Doris Mary, Sue and Kathy Lee.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Daryl Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot in Oak Hill North.
