Janice Joan Surber

Janice (Jan) Joan Zachary Surber passed away on April 7th, 2026 at the age of 86.

Jan was born January 4th, 1940 in Crawfordsville and lived out her life in Crawfordsville. Upon graduating from Crawfordsville High School in 1958, Jan married Ron Surber, her high school sweetheart, in June 1958. Jan and Ron began their family raising four children. Jan was employed in the Crawfordsville School System for more than twenty years holding various roles at the School Corporation Office, Tuttle Jr. High, and High School. Jan provided bookkeeping and administrative support to the family business, Ken’s Liquor Store, and worked part-time as bookkeeper at the Crawfordsville Municipal Golf Course early on in her retirement. Throughout the years, Jan was an avid and active supporter of her children’s and grandchildren’s participation in theater, dance, music, scouts, and athletics.

Jan was preceded in death by Ron Surber (husband), Jeff Surber (Son), and Frances and Ken Zachary (parents). Jan is survived by Janna Surber, Mike (Lesa) Surber and Greg (Michael Creasy) Surber, along with her three grandchildren Braden Surber, Ty Gilstrap (Fiancé Hailey Coggins), and Jordan Gilstrap.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 11 at Oak Hill Cemetery on Grant Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County, Paradigm Hospice or the Alzheimers’ Association.
