Obituary

Jean Friend Chadwick, 91, of Crawfordsville, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018, at her residence at Whitlock Place.

Jean was born February 16, 1927, on a farm near Taylorsville, IL, to Glenn and Izetta Miller Thomas.  She married Cale H. Friend on March 23, 1946, who preceded her in death March 2, 1994.  She married Delmas Chadwick on February 23, 2003.  He survives.

She attended Crawfordsville High School, graduating in 1944.  After graduation, she became secretary to the Montgomery County Purdue Extension office for 14 years, which included working with the 4-H clubs and their leaders, and 4-H Queen Contests.  She then attended beauty school in Indianapolis, graduating in 1960, and working for Joan Evans at Joan's House of Beauty in Darlington.  Jean was also Secretary and Promotions coordinator for the Crawfordsville Boulevard Mall.  After becoming a mother and raising her children, she became Executive Secretary for the Crawfordsville/Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, retiring after 24 years.  She enjoyed talking to people about Crawfordsville and Montgomery County and always enjoyed helping out during the Chamber Christmas Parades and Chamber Gold Scrambles.

Jean was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and enjoyed many different activities she did over her years as a member.  One passion of Jean's was being on the Alumni Board of Crawfordsville High School and helping to plan the annual Alumni Banquet.  Her other passion was working on the committee for raising funds to restore the Montgomery County Courthouse Clocktower, which she got to participate in the dedication of last June.

Jean was also active in many clubs and community activities.  Member of the Indiana Federation of Business and Professional Women, which she was a past president and was named an honorary lifetime member for her more than 60 years of membership. Other memberships include Zonta International, Harmony 18 Extension Homemakers, Crawfordsville Kiwanis, and Athens Chapter International Travel Study Club.  She was also involved in Montgomery County Historical Society, board member of Crawfordsville Housing Authority, and served as secretary of the Montgomery County Board of Realtors Multiple Listing Services, and very active in helping community activities and projects.

She enjoyed traveling and had traveled to all 50 states and also enjoyed "cruising" the Caribbean.  She traveled with family and was also a tour director for Sugar Creek Premium Tours.  But her favorite places were a beach in Florida or enjoying Turkey Run State Park.

Jean was also well known for her public speaking.  She has been a lector at her church, emceed many events, spoke at schools and conventions, but was most known for her book reviews she would give to club and organizations all throughout Indiana and other states when requested.  Everyone always enjoyed her interpretations of each book.  She would always say "it makes me feel good to know I have made people smile".

She is survived by her husband Delmas, daughter Lisa (Brent) Elmore, son Scott Friend and his fiancée, Shelia Parish, all of Crawfordsville.  Also survived by step-children Karen (Gary) Simpson of Crawfordsville, Alan (Marilyn) Chadwick of New Ross, Dale (Lisa) Chadwick, and Jerry Chadwick both of Crawfordsville; 13 step grandchildren, 28 step great-grandchildren and

9 step great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Cale, and sister Jeri Sheldon.

Funeral services will be held 11:00am Thursday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home with Pastors Judy Early and Tami Mussche officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery North.  Visitation will be from 4-8 Wednesday at the funeral home.
