John Thomas Barnes, 83, of Crawfordsville, passed away April 18, 2025, in a work-related accident.

John was born January 24, 1942, in Reading, OH, to Leonard & Nellie Barnes. He married the love of his life, Kathy Peterman, on April 18, 1970.

Survivors include two sons, John W "Billy" Barnes (Julie) and Shaun Barnes (Chelsey), both of Crawfordsville. A daughter, Tammy Reed, of Corbin, KY. Seven grandchildren, Dakoda (Ethan) McCormick, Bailly (Mason) Barnes, Reagan Barnes, Miranda Barnes, Zaylen Barnes, all of Crawfordsville, Bentley, and Paislie Barnes of Veedersburg. Four Great-grandchildren, Carter & Kinzleigh Foxworthy, Addasyn Barnes, and Wrenley McCormick, all of Crawfordsville. He is also survived by a sister, Shirley Poe of St. Petersburg, FL.

John was a retiree of RR Donnelly & Sons. He was also the owner of Deer Exchange, where he had bought and sold hides for decades. John was a jack of all trades and never knew a stranger. A professional storyteller from all his life experiences.  In his younger years he raced dirt bikes and go karts as well as being a world champion Coon hunter.  John enjoyed Car Shows and building custom Hot rods. Above all, he absolutely cherished all of his grandchildren. John was a hard worker his entire life, and instilled that upon his boys.

He was preceded in death by his wife Kathy, Grandson Ashton, brothers Butch, Bobby, Jimmy, Donnie and sisters Brenda and Beatrice.

Cremation was chosen. The family will plan a memorial service at a later date.
