Obituary

John "Chile" Childress, 82, passed away on December 17, 2024. Born on May 8, 1942, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, to Rosemary and Don Childress. The eldest of three children, he grew up in Linden with siblings Stephen and Kelly. John lived a remarkable life defined by his intellect, curiosity, and deep love for family and friends.

He graduated from Linden High School in 1960 and was a proud member of the sectional-winning basketball team. A graduate of Western Michigan University, John earned a degree in Mathematics, which sparked a lifelong passion for exploration and discovery. He approached life with insatiable curiosity, always seeking to understand the world more deeply, whether through reading, photography, or his fascination with history, particularly the Civil War and World War II.

As a young man, John attained the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and continued to give back to the scouting program as a committed volunteer, guiding and inspiring others with his wisdom and generosity.

John shared his life with Mary Ann, his devoted wife and partner of more than 57 years. She survives him. Also surviving are the three children they raised together: Scott (Chie Sharp), Amy (Chell Nyquist), and Susan (Rondal Mannon). His greatest pride and joy came from his role as grandfather to Olivia and Ellie Childress, Anders and Niels Nyquist, and as bonus grandpa to Dylan, Jack, Olivia, and Charlie Mannon.

Anyone who met John knew of his enthusiasm for sports, particularly the Purdue Boilermakers. He could often be found at football or men's or women's basketball games – first with his parents, then with his kids, and lately with his grandkids. He was a loud and proud spectator when the women's basketball team won the national championship in San Jose.

John's many passions reflected his vibrant spirit and deep sense of humor. He loved music, cooking, museums, and spending time with family and friends. He was a gifted storyteller, always willing to share tales and anecdotes with anyone willing to listen. He never met a pun he did not like. When he gave the memorial for his father, he spoke about the close bond they shared and referred to Don as "the most unforgettable character I ever met." That description certainly befits John in the eyes of his own children.

A memorial service will be held at Hunt & Son Funeral Home, on Monday December 23 at 2:00pm. Visitation will be from 12-2.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Purdue Convocations or to Friends of Scouting – Sagamore Council, honoring John's love of the arts and lifelong learning.

John "Chile" Childress will be remembered for his kind heart, sharp mind, and the lasting impact he made on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
