Obituary

John Edward Skomp, 83, of Crawfordsville, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 in Franciscan St. Elizabeth Hospital in Crawfordsville.

Mr. Skomp was born to Joseph B. and Faye E. (Magner) Skomp in Bloomington, Indiana on February 26, 1932. He married Wilma Ann Skomp in March 1975. He was a graduate of Switz City Central High School, Indiana University, and Indiana State University. As a freshman at Indiana University, he was a member of the South Hall Buccaneers, the winning team in the first running of the Little 500 bicycle race in 1951. He served in the United States Navy and was privileged to travel to Washington, D.C. on an Honor Flight in 2014.

Mr. Skomp taught science and math at Tuttle Middle School, where he also coached basketball. Earlier in his career, he also taught in Robinson, IL. During his retirement years, he served as a docent at the Old Jail Museum and was a delivery volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon, and a member of the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association. He loved his family, IU basketball, travel, reading (especially World War II history), and crossword puzzles.

Surviving family members include wife Ann Skomp, Crawfordsville; daughter Elizabeth Skomp (Martin Blackwell), Sewanee, TN; son David Skomp, Indianapolis; granddaughter Vivien Blackwell; aunt Carolyn Burgess (Robert), Crawfordsville; sister Ruth Skomp, Portland, OR; sister Janet Nybakke (John), Astoria, OR; brother Joseph Skomp (Irene), Lyons, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Faye Skomp, and a brother, James Skomp.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 31 at Hunt and Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Keith Strain officiating. Friends and family may call at Hunt and Son from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30. Burial will take place at Bethel Cemetery in Washington, Indiana at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 2.
