Joy Adele "Duck" Shaver
November 3, 1941 to October 25, 2016
Joy A.(Julian) Shaver, 74, of Crawfordsville passed away Tuesday morning.
She was born November 3, 1941 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN. She was the daughter of Ruth W. (Garrison) and Russell A. Julian. Joy played the clarinet in the family band called the Julian Seven, who traveled throughout US, Canada, and Mexico in a 1950 Desoto Suburban.
She married Thomas R. Shaver on June 14, 1964. He survives.
She was co-owner of Tom's Marine Sales of Crawfordsville, IN and a pharmacist at the Crawfordsville CVS formally Rite Aid. She loved being outside. Every spring you could find her in the woods hunting for morel mushrooms. She drove her ATV to work every day, even when it was bitter cold. Joy also enjoyed farming with her family. She worked the ground with her own tractor and was an integral part of the farming operations. Each year she selected the site, planted and harvested her plot of sweet corn. Tending to her herd of Black Angus cattle every day, Joy lived every day to the fullest.
She was a proud Purdue Alumni, and met her husband (Tom, the drum major) in the band. She was a majorette in the Purdue All American Marching Band. Joy, her husband Tom, son Ken, and her daughter Jill all performed together in the halftime Homecoming show. This was the first time in the 100-year history of Purdue bands that two generations have performed together.
In addition to her husband, Tom, she is survived by her daughter Jill M. (Logan) Mays of Novi, MI and her son Kenneth A. (Lori) Shaver of Crawfordsville; two grandchildren, Sam and Holly Shaver. One brother Gary Julian of Aurora, Colorado; 3 sisters Winifred (Bill) Heuring, of Hobart; Lynne (Tom) Miller of Mitchell, IN; and Jan (Tom) Weir of Bloomington, IN.
