Obituary

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and best friend, Joy Jean Smith, 78, of Crawfordsville went home to be with the Lord December 21, 2019 while surrounded by family. She will be missed so much, but we know that she is no longer suffering.

Born December 10, 1941, in West Point, Mississippi, Joy was the daughter to John Cicero and Maude Evelyn (Cook) Stephens.

Joy was a 1959 graduate of Crawfordsville High School.

Joy married Harold David Smith on May 25, 1959.

Joy worked at Crown Cork & Seal for more than 40 years. She and Harold farmed and owned Smith Feed & Farm. They ran their produce stand locally at the Farmer's Market and for 34 years at Steam Corner. Joy also clerked at Hamilton County Auto Auction and other sale barns for many years. During the summer months after retirement, Joy worked the gate house at Lake Waveland and at Country Folks Greenhouse and Produce.

After retirement, Joy & Harold spent many winters in Arizona prospecting for gold on their claim. They were members of the GPAA and LDMA. They also enjoyed trips to Alaska to prospect for gold.

Joy was a member of the Moose, Eagles, VFW, and the American Legion. She enjoyed playing euchre and having lunch with the girls every Saturday.

Joy was very artistic and loved to paint…anything from canvas and saw blades to pumpkins and gourds. Her artistic work could make you laugh, cry, remember, or just smile that little smile! Her paintings are all so beautiful!

Joy worked very hard her entire life to support her family. She was one of the strongest women you could every meet. She possessed a dig in attitude that wouldn't quit, even in her last days.

Joy was the life of the party even when there was no party! She knew how to love, hug, live life to the fullest, and gain anyone's attention. Her laugh and red hair will be remembered for years to come. Heaven has gained a great angel.

Joy is survived by daughter Robin (Bobby) Kiger, Crawfordsville and son David (Cami) Smith, Crawfordsville. Joy is also survived by four grandchildren Crockett (Katie) Smith, Lebanon; Vicki Ferrante, Crawfordsville; Christopher Smith, Crawfordsville; Robert Kiger, Crawfordsville along with two great grandchildren Lucy and Cassandra Smith. Joy is also survived by her family of brothers-in-law, Larry Smith (Terri Griffin), Crawfordsville; Jerry (Pat) Smith, Roachdale; and sisters-in-law Lorraine (Bud) Brady, Crawfordsville; Karen Thorson, Florida.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 58 years, Harold David Smith.

Cremation was chosen with a visitation being held from 9-11am on Tuesday, December 24, at Hunt & Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville. Service will follow at 11.
