Obituary

Larry Kay Sterling, aged 75, died on May 14, 2015, with his family by his side in his home in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He was born on January 25th, 1940 in Deshler, Ohio to Violet and Lyndus Sterling. His father Lyndus instilled in him the ethos of always repairing things on your own. His mother Violet encouraged his love of music.

He and his wife Penny were married for 46 years, and they had three daughters. Abigail, his first daughter, died at birth. He is survived by his daughters Elizabeth and Anne, and his wife Penny. He is also survived by his son-in-law Ryan Irvin, and two sisters, Carolyn Dahms and Marilyn Edwards, as well as many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind several beloved pets- Eli, Ike and Ava- who were faithful family companions.

A scientific observer of life, Larry viewed the world through the lens of an engineer, his profession for thirty nine years. He was employed at R.R. Donnelly for thirty six years as a Mechanical Engineer. When we wasn't working, Larry enjoyed pursuing his many interests and expanding his realm of experiences. He relished the opportunity to spend time outdoors, and during one summer, hiked part of the Appalachian Trail with his daughters. He participated in many weekend long group bike rides, and enjoyed physical challenges. He also actively sought out intellectual stimulation and challenges.
Over the years, he and his family traveled to Ireland together and visited every continental state. Larry cultivated a positive outlook on life and embraced activities of painting, composing music, writing and reading nonfiction. He and his wife designed and built their first home, which fostered a lifelong interest in home improvement projects.

He served in the West Indies as an Lt. JG in the US Navy. Prior to that, he was a graduate of Deshler High School and Indiana Technical School in Fort Wayne. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

A memorial service is planned for May 23rd, at 1pm. A visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 11am, at Trinity United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Larry's name may be directed to World Vision or Trinity United Methodist Church.
