Obituary

Richard W. Kenyon, 90, passed away Friday afternoon December 12, 2014 at Coventry Meadows Senior Living facility in Fort Wayne surrounded by family members.

Mr. Kenyon was born on August 15, 1924 in Waynetown to Clayton and Sopha (Smith) Kenyon. He was a 1943 graduate of Waynetown High School, where he also played basketball.

He was a proud veteran, serving in the Navy aboard the USS Enterprise, the most decorated ship of World War II, from August 1943 through February 1946. During this time, the Enterprise was active in the Pacific Theatre, including the battles of the Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. After the war, he remained on board the Enterprise for Operation Magic Carpet, bringing soldiers home from the Europe. He was a past President and member of the Board of Directors of the USS Enterprise Association.

He was employed by R.R. Donnelley's and Sons as a proofreader, retiring March 1, 1987 with over 40 years of service. His memberships included the American Legion - Post 72, Elks Club, and the Masonic Lodge.

He married M. Eileen Thompson on July 28, 1951 in Waynetown, who survives. Also surviving are children Michael W. (Peggy) Kenyon of Fort Wayne and David B. Kenyon (Robin) of Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, grandchildren Jennifer, Cassidy, Stacey, Jack, and Caroline Kenyon, and great-grandchildren Kailey Kenyon and Sierra Wagner. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Merlyn Beam.

A celebration of his life is scheduled at 2:00 pm on Monday, December 22 at Hunt and Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville. Burial will be at Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home two hours prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the USS Enterprise Association, 127 Lake Street, Walkerton, Indiana, 46574-1004 to support the River Vale, New Jersey Public Library's USS Enterprise Exhibit and Collection.
