Robert W. Snyder, 89, of Crawfordsville died at 3:10 PM, March 12, 201 at St. Elizabeth Hospital East.
He has a 1946 graduate of Crawfordsville High School. He was born in Kokomo, Indiana; his family moved to Crawfordsville in 1930. Upon graduation from high school, Bob attended Purdue University in 1946-7. In 1947, he received a congressional appointment to the United States Military Academy from then Congressmen Johnson of the Seventh Congregational District.
Upon graduation at West Point in June 1951, he was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Artillery. He married Mary Carolyn Alston of Crawfordsville on September 15, 1951 at the Artillery Bowl Chapel, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
During the next twenty years, he was assigned to various staff and command positions in Germany, Ohio, Oklahoma, New York, Korea, Florida, and Alaska. During the period 1958-61, he was assigned to teach in the Earth, Space, and Graphics Department at West Point. His final assignment in the Army was as Inspector General of Fort Richardson, Alaska. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1971 and returned with his family to Crawfordsville.
In 1971, he returned to Purdue and earned a teacher's license. In 1972, he began a fifteen-year teaching career at Tuttle Junior High School. In 1975, he graduated from Indiana State University with a Master's Degree in Science and Mathematics. He retired from teaching in 1987 after major surgery.
In 1989, he began an income tax preparation practice and continued this until 2013. During the period from 1989 thru 1992, he earned by study, test and experience the following professional credentials: Chartered Financial Consultant, Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Life Underwriter and Enrolled Agent. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association of Indiana and the West Point Society of Indiana.
His wife predeceased him in 1996. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Van Osdol of Crawfordsville and Sheri Brosz of Huntington, Indiana and three granddaughters: April Uncapher (Mark), Mary Ann Brosz and Tabatha Brosz and great-granddaughter Sierra Whitaker and great-grandsons: Tyler Brown, Christopher Barrett, Keegin Brosz, Anthony Dials and Jacob Dials. There will be a showing on Saturday, March 17 th from 1-3 at Hunt & Son Funeral Home to pay your respects. Contributions may be given in his name to the American Heart Association. His remains will be buried beside his wife at Oak Hill Cemetery-Grant Avenue. Funeral services will be 3:00PM on Saturday following visitation.
