Rudy Hohenstein

November 8, 1954 — April 30, 2026

Crawfordsville

Rudy R. Hohenstein, 71, of Crawfordsville passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 30th. He was born in Monrovia, California to Robert and Nancy Switzer Hohenstein who proceed him in death.

Rudy proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy for seven years, an experience that reflected his deep sense of duty and patriotism. He went on to build a long and dedicated career at Nucor Steel, where he worked until his well-earned retirement. Outside of his professional life, Rudy found great joy in the simple pleasures that meant the most to him. Over the years, he also developed a love for gardening, taking great pride in his work, especially his tomato garden.  He loved spending time at the lake, where he could relax and enjoy the outdoors, often in the company of a small, carefully chosen circle of friends and loved ones. Though his circle was select, his loyalty to those within it was unwavering. Rudy’s love for his country was evident in the way he carried himself and the values he lived by each day. He was deeply patriotic and took pride in both his service and his role as a citizen. He was a constant and familiar presence on the sidelines of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, always showing up to support and cheer them on. Well-known for his strong opinions and willingness to speak his mind, Rudy never hesitated to offer advice—whether it was asked for or not. It was just one of the many ways he showed he cared.

Rudy is survived by his wife Darla Hohenstein. Also surviving are his children: Belinda Hohenstein, Vicki (Jeff) Knuth, Trevor (Amanda) Hohenstein, Jeremy Paris, Timothy (Ashley) Paris, Casey (Brandon) Barnett, and Nichole (Nick) Messer. He has two sisters, Belinda Kiger and Janet Hohenstein. He also has several grandchildren:  Randie (Ben) Watson, Aaron (Anna) McClure, Erika (Hayden) Lough, Kristopher (Ashley) Knuth, Denver Slone, Steve Barnes, Devon Brewer, Zeharah Hohenstein, Zoey Hohenstein, Dylan Hutchison, Sydney Hohenstein, Carter Truax, Caydence Paris, Jayden Paris, Cadance Rose, Lorynn Paris, Jaxon Paris, Maxwell Rose, Preston Paris, Sylis Barnett, Ryker Barnett and Olivia Messer.
