Samuel (Sam) Haslam, 82, of Crawfordsville passed away Thursday, February 13, 2020 in his home. He was Born December 29, 1937 in Crawfordsville to Frank and Eula (Mitchel) Haslam. He was a 1956 graduate of Crawfordsville High School where he was a member of the 1954 and 1956 state championship golf team and was also the 1955 state championship runner up. He also attended Butler University.
In 1958 he married Patricia "Pat" Titus. They were married for 43 years before her passing in 2002. After her passing he then married Willie Rowe in 2014, she survives. He is also survived by six children: Debbie Kendricks (Dave Howard) of Otterbein, Sam (Brenda) of Crawfordsville, Mike (Sara) of Crawfordsville, Patrick (Connie) of Waveland, Doug of Crawfordsville, Shawn (Dianne) of New Ross. A sister, Janice of Crawfordsville, a brother Dick of Darlington, and three step children, Jackie Harwood, Curt Chandler, Brian Chandler, 24 grandchildren, and 30 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Patricia, sister Carolyn Hendricks, two brothers in-law Bill Hendricks and Charles Cook, and great-granddaughter Emma Kendricks.
He had worked at United Auto Service, was a former Golf Pro at the Crawfordsville Municipal Golf Course, and then worked at Mid States Wire Mill until they closed. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, The Jaycees, and a past president of the Fifty Plus Club. He also officiated high school and collegiate athletics for fifteen years. He was instrumental in recovering funds owed to past Mid States employees and getting the railroad incline improved on County Road 150 South where he resided for fifty years.
Sam was a hard worker and a devout family man and knew almost everyone. As a member of the Jaycees he even picked up Jesse Owens from the Indy Airport to bring him to Wabash College. One of his proudest moments was seeing his son Doug win the 1985 Indiana State Wrestling Title. He loved to play golf, watch Butler and Purdue Basketball and occasionally IU.
He was a truly great man and could make anyone he met feel special. He will be truly missed by the ones he leaves behind along with two special friends Duke Ellington, and Burt Rennick.
Visitation will be 4-8pm on Tuesday, February 18 at Hunt and Son Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Wednesday February 19 at 11:00am with Chaplain Rich Still officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Riley Children's Hospital in memory of Emma Jo Kendricks.
