Veronica “Vera” George, 95, of Crawfordsville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at her daughter’s home on July 19, 2026, to spend eternity with her Heavenly Father.
Vera was born Dec. 10, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, to Walter and Anna Cuney. She grew up in a household rich with Irish and Italian heritage. She met her husband, Lee George, while he served in the U.S. Navy onboard the USS Oriskany at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They married in 1952 and moved to his hometown of Crawfordsville, where Vera spent the next 74 years.
Vera and Lee were familiar faces in the local business community, starting with their Coney Island Cafe (located on the block where CVS stands today). After that, from 1965 to 1975, they owned and operated the Captain’s Table restaurant, which held a deeply special place in Vera’s heart. While Lee tended bar, Vera waited tables, building lasting friendships with many of their patrons. She loved Friday and Saturday nights, when they had live bands and dancing, and fondly shared stories of the weekend shenanigans and unforgettable antics that went on there. She later worked at the Kroger deli for several years.
Vera was a master gardener who propagated a colorful collection of African Violets. She grew her own tomatoes, and enjoyed planting all manner of trees, bushes and colorful flowers in her yard. She was deeply compassionate, generous and hard working. Over her lifetime she selflessly served as caregiver to multiple family members, and was quick to offer help to anyone in need. She loved all animals, maintained bird feeders and feeding stations for deer and other wildlife that frequented her yard, and could identify most wild birds by their appearance or their calls. She spent hours on Charity Navigator and donated to countless charities. Vera also served on the board of directors for the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; her parents; her brother, Pat Cuney; and Kate Mason.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan George (Mike Fons); and her grandchildren, Michael Fons and Julie Fons.
Funeral mass will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 29th at St. Bernard Catholic Church with a visitation 5-7 PM Tuesday evening. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County.
